Despite attracting 9 million visitors each year, Thailand’s culture remains unaffected. Over 90% of the population are practicing Theravada Buddhists, and King Bhumibol is a revered figure across the nation.
Most people start their travels in Bangkok, and although it can be overwhelming at first, there are plenty of guesthouses to stay at and temples to visit. Bangkok has dominated Thailand’s urban scene since the 18th century, and although there are western-style shopping malls, the city remains true to its heritage. Chinatown is a must-see in Bangkok, full of bustle, noise and enticing stalls. You can buy anything here, from jewellery and hardware to wholesale food and fabrics. The area used to be full of opium dens, brothels and pawnshops. Now, the area is a lot tamer, though you still find the occasional brothel, and instead of opium, the current drug of choice is heroin.
Chiang Mai is a city full of ancient historical sites, with over 300 temples. It’s modern, clean and friendly, and easy to get around. Chiang Mai is a good spot to trek the surrounding mountains, though some of the hillside tribes are suffering from this, being turned into little more than human zoos. Every night a bazaar is held at the Ping River, where you can find fabulously cheap goods, such as designer - real and fake - merchandise.
Phuket is the most popular island off Thailand. The economy relies completely on tourism, but still manages to retain a spark of its traditional heritage. It’s also a proper party island, Asian-style, which means cheaper than a week in the Mediterranean islands. Another island, this one off the southeast, is Ko Samui, and is truly stunning. Once ‘untouched’ by the tourist industries, it’s fast becoming a westernised holiday resort. Despite this, the beaches still remain beautiful, and are lined with palm trees complete with coconuts.
February to March is the best time to visit Thailand, when the weathers not too hot. Monsoon season lasts from July to September, so it’s best to avoid these months as there’s plenty of rain. Peak tourist months are July and August and November to January.
