Malaysia has a fascinating mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs, and is one of the easiest countries in Southeast Asia to adapt to from the West. This is partly due to the love of Western industrialisation, (Kuala Lumpur is filled with 21st century skyscrapers), and partly to do with the friendly atmosphere, and vibrant economy.
Kuala Lumpur is a modern-day Asian city filled with gleaming buildings, but unlike Singapore, it also retains much of its traditional elements. There’s a vibrant Chinatown with street markets at night, and many of the colonial buildings in the centre of the city have been left alone. The Golden Triangle is where to head for shopping. Almost a city within the city, the Triangle is home to the tallest building in the world (the Petronas Towers), plus millions of shops, luxury hotels, restaurants, and exclusive clubs and bars.
Melaka is Malaysia’s most historic city; a blend of Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British influxes, it's also the most multicultural. Once the key trading port of the region, Meleka is now little more than a quiet backwater. Stadthuys, built from 1641 to 1660, is the most striking relic of the Dutch, and for Portuguese architecture visit St Paul’s Church. Built over 400 years ago, it sits in an imposing position atop St Paul’s Hill. The Chinese Cheng Hoon Teng Temple was founded in 1646 and is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia.
The picture-perfect Tioman Island lies just off the eastern peninsula. It boasts clear water with spectacular coral, clean beaches, virtually deserted jungle and dramatic mountains. The tourists usually outnumber the population of Tioman, and it is suspected that the island was the basis for Bali Hai in the film South Pacific.
Penang Island is a huge tourist destination, with brilliant beaches. The capital, Georgetown, is vibrant and motivated, but like Kuala Lumpur retains far more of the Chinese culture than Singapore and Hong Kong. The British Captain Light was the first person to alight on the island in 1786, which was then virtually uninhabited. He set up a free port and built his fort, Fort Cornwallis. There are plenty of kongsis, where the Chinese of the same clan of surname meet to chat and worship. The most impressive is the Khoo Kongsi. When the original roof burnt down on the very night it was constructed it was no surprise to the Chinese. It was thought that it was a sign the building was too grandiose and elaborate. A slightly less grandiose building was built next-door, the one still standing today.
