Hong Kong is a great gateway to entering China. The mix of Western and Cantonese makes it a gentler introduction to Asia. This interesting mix of cultures makes it a fascinating city to visit. The view across the harbour is one of the most striking urban skylines across the world, the beaches are lovely and if you look hard enough you can discover the remains of traditional Chinese villages, mainly amongst the New Territories. The strangest link to China has occurred from the handover of power from the British. Hong Kong is a semi-democratic state under the overriding communist influence of Beijing - a ‘Special Administrative Region of China’.
The city of Hong Kong is full of life and energy, and it's hard not to get caught up in it. The people of Hong Kong are addicted to making money, shopping and brand names, but the few hundred extremely rich (mainly Cantonese) mean that the overwhelming numbers of people working long hours for little pay are often overlooked. Saying this, the per capita GDP has doubled over the last decade, and is now larger than its former imperial power.
Hong Kong Island’s main attraction is just watching the people go by. Head round to the south side of the island to visit Aberdeen, where many people live and work on junks moored in the harbour. It’s worth getting a harbour tour and visiting the floating restaurants. Repulse Bay, also on the southern side, is the most popular beach, but also the most crowded at the weekends. Try Stanley if you’re after more peace (although if you wanted a relaxing holiday you’re in the wrong place!). The Central Market, Old Man Mo Temple and Zoological and Botanical Gardens are other attractions on the island.
552m above sea level, the views from Victoria Peak are stunning. The main viewing spot is on top of a shopping mall, and is striking at night when it's all lit up.
The main tourist destination in Hong Kong is Kowloon, where you’ll find shops, bars, topless dancers and restaurants all compacted into the region of Tsim Sha Tsui. Kowloon has another more cultured side too. Visit the Space Museum, the Museum of History and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
Hong Kong’s subtropical climate means that the best time to visit is between October and April, when the weather is cooler and the humidity and pollution levels drop substantially. The Chinese New Year celebrations are fantastic if you can brave the crowds and rain. Most people receive four days off during this period (somewhere from late January to early February, depending on the Western and Chinese calendars), and there’s usually a spectacular fireworks display over Victoria Harbour.
